Tenerife (Tenerife Spanish) is the largest of the Canary Islands and belongs to Spain. The island is about 80 kilometers long, up to 50 kilometers wide and covers an area of 2034.38 square kilometers. It has 906 854 inhabitants the most populous island of Spain. The capital is Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The locals are called Tinerfeños

Tenerife is a volcanic island. She belongs - like all the Canary Islands - topographically to Africa, and is located about 250 km off the coast of Morocco and the Western Sahara (Gran Canaria is about 170 km away, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote are within 100 miles),and is about 1,300 kilometers away from the south coast of its Spanish mother country. The climate is balanced.

The island of Tenerife was formed about 12 million years ago by volcanic activity. This is due to a hot spot in the earths mantle, the bulges caused by this activity caused an island chain to form, while the African plate drifted to the east. The geologically oldest parts of the island are the Anaga Mountains in the far northeast, the Teno mountains in the north west and small areas of (Banda del Sur) in the extreme south.

The younger volcanic massif in the center of the island, is in the middle of a 12 × 17 km caldera called Las Cañadas. From it rises the highest mountain in Spain, the 3718-meter-high Pico del Teide.

Seen from above, these mountain areas, together form the shape of the letter Y.

The volcanic island is still active, shown by the documented volcanic eruptions from the Mount Teide and the Teno mountain range in the years 1706, 1798 and 1909.
